Xavier Becerra’s Latest No on 39 Ad Misleads California Voters on Prop. 39
August 7, 2026
(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) – Xavier Becerra and other opponents continue to spread false and misleading claims about the measure. Their repeated lies show either a fundamental misunderstanding of Proposition 39 or a deliberate effort to mislead California voters.
The facts are straightforward. Proposition 39 is a California-led ballot initiative that protects every legal vote with commonsense voter ID. Nothing in Proposition 39 gives the federal government any control over California’s election. Claims suggesting otherwise are categorically false.
“If he actually read Proposition 39, he'd know it protects every legal vote with commonsense voter ID, citizenship verification and cleaner voter rolls,” said press secretary for Californians for Voter ID, Yes on 39, Meredith Shields.
Nearly 1.3 million Californians, including Democrats, Republicans and Independents, signed the petition to qualify Proposition 39 for the ballot because they believe California should strengthen trust in the election process.
Californians deserve an honest debate based on the actual language of the initiative. We encourage every voter to read Proposition 39 for themselves and reject the false claims being promoted by its opponents.
