Why Voter ID

Our democracy relies on confidence in our elections, but Californians’ trust is fading. Voters are concerned about election security thanks, in part, to issues like unchecked ballot harvesting, lack of citizenship verification, and inconsistent signature reviews. A bombshell report by the non-partisan Transparency Foundation gives California a failing grade on election practices.

"From its failure to maintain accurate voter registration lists to its refusal to verify the identity and eligibility of voters, California by far has the worst election practices in the nation."

-Transparency California

We are launching a transformative campaign, bringing a common-sense constitutional amendment to the 2026 ballot to restore order, fairness, and trust in California’s elections.

The Voter ID Initiative: A Two-Step Solution

The proposed amendment will:

  1. Require Voter ID for Every Ballot Counted: All votes, whether cast in-person or by mail, will be counted only after verification of a government-issued identification.

  2. Citizenship Verification: Require the Secretary of State and county elections officials to use government data to verify citizenship attestations on voter registrations, closing loopholes and protecting voter rolls from error or abuse.

These basic safeguards will not hinder legal voting, but guarantee each valid vote is protected.

Widespread Support for Voter ID

This is not a partisan issue; it’s a matter of integrity and common sense. Poll after poll shows that Californians overwhelmingly support voter ID requirements:

  • In January, a Public Opinion Strategies poll showed 79% support for citizenship verification and 68% for voter ID, including 93% of Republicans, 70% of Independents, and 52% of Democrats.

  • In late April 2025, UC Berkeley IGS Poll found that 71% of registered voters support a proof of citizenship requirement to vote including 95% of Republicans, 59% of Democrats, and 71% of voters registered with other parties or as “no-party-preference.”

These numbers make it clear: voter ID is a unifying, popular solution whose time has come.

Why It Matters – Now

Recent expansions of mail-in voting, automatic registration, and suspension of safeguards have put trust in elections at risk. States with voter ID laws and citizenship checks tend to enjoy higher public confidence and fewer election disputes. It’s time for California to adopt a system we can trust.
