ICYMI: Voter ID Ballot Measure Proposal Filed with California Attorney General
07/23/2025
California Attorney General’s office for language approval, supported by proponents Don DiCostanzo with Californians for Voter ID, State Senator Tony Strickland, and State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio.
“California’s election system lacks the transparency and necessary safeguards to ensure a fair process," said Julie Luckey, Executive Director of Californians for Voter ID. "According to recent polls, over 70% of voters—including majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents—support some form of voter ID. This measure will help restore public confidence in our elections and ensure that every valid ballot is counted and every valid ballot matters."
The initiative will accomplish these goals by imposing two new requirements:
Elections officials must maintain accurate voter registration lists and use best efforts to verify citizenship attestations using government data.
Voters must present a government-issued identification if voting in person, or the last four digits of a unique identifying number from government-issued identification if voting by mail, each time the voter casts a ballot in any election in the state.
